Screen Time #46: How We Get Kryptonite

I'm joined this week by Badass Digest's Devin Faraci, USA Today's Brian Truitt, and DVD/Blu-ray producer Robert Meyer Burnett to discuss the death of Paul Walker, the future of Fast & Furious, the casting of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, the growing slates full of comic book blockbusters coming from major studios, back channel chatter about X-Men: Days of Future Past, and where (or if) we will hit a saturation point. Are Avengers-scale blockbusters the next bubble in filmmaking?

At the end, we get some nice dirt from Rob Burnett about the work he's been doing on the Star Trek Blu-rays, both The Next Generation and Enterprise.

Screen Time 16: Value-Added Material:TNG (with Robert Meyer Burnett)

Based on the two currently released, the Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-ray sets represent an outstanding achievement in both 35mm preservation and home video. On this episode of Screen Time, I talk to Robert Meyer Burnett, one of the co-producers of this series, which will see more seasons out next year.

The next episode of Screen Time features an interview with legendary voice director Andrea Romano. It, along with #16 here, are among my favorite bits of work I've done with Screen Time.

We have some more great guests coming up, including Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro (subject to their very busy schedules). 2013 is going to be a big year for this show.

I should also mention here that I am now booking sponsors directly for both Screen Time and Giant Size. Drop me a line through the contact form if you or your company are interested in sponsoring these shows. We can accomodate varying levels of budget and placement.

TNG S1 Replacement Discs

CBS has done the right thing. When you call, make sure to have your Blu-ray set in-hand. They'll need proof of purchase info. You also won't have to mail in your flawed discs to get the replacements.

From the press release earlier today:

Dear Star Trek Fans, We have discovered an anomaly in the English 7.1 DTS Master Audio track in our Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 Blu-ray Box set.

There are some episodes that inadvertently had their front channel designations incorrectly mapped, resulting in an undesired playback experience when listening to them in a 7.1 or 5.1 Surround Sound environment.

We are quickly working to remedy the situation. Replacement discs (Disc 1, 3 and 4) will be made available free of charge.

Please email phe.stng@bydeluxe.com for details regarding the replacement program.
You may also call 1-877-DELUXE6 (877-335-8936) between 8am to 6pm Pacific, Monday-Friday. We strive to provide our fans the best Blu-ray experience possible and sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.

TNG Blu Audio Bugs

I should have known that I wasn't nuts when I thought that there was something off in the sound mix on this thing.

According to The Digital Bits, CBS is now aware there's an audio mastering bug that affects seven episodes on the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 Blu-ray set. The 7.1 tracks bleed audio from the center channel into the Front Left and Frot Right channels. The affected episodes are Encounter at Farpoint, Hide and Q, The Big Goodbye, Datalore, 11001001, and Too Short a Season.

I thought it was just flawed source.

Not Quite HD

Tonight, I went to a screening event for the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 Blu-ray. I went and paid my money, having already watched the entirety of a review copy of the set over the weekend. I went because I wondered how the crowd would react to the astounding jump up in quality on two of Season 1’s more visually impressive episodes: “Where No One Has Gone Before” and “Datalore” (aka an “If Only You Listened to Wesley Crusher” Double Feature).

Busy Day

I've spent much of the day on "work work" in addition to working on a Comic-Con wrapup for Ain't It Cool News.

Late in the afternoon, I started digging into a freshly-arrived copy of next Tuesday's Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 Blu-ray. It's impressive to say the least. If you are into TNG and own a Blu-ray player, I can confidently say that this will bring you a great deal of joy.

Regarding the other thing that has flooded the news today: I decided to carry on to the best of my ability as if it had it not happened in the first place.
