Electric Shadow

Good Will Hunting 15th Anniversary Do-Over

Even though I state on last week's Screen Time that this disc features a revised transfer, it turns out that isn't the case. I imagined slight improvements that are apparently not there. I guess I was just irrationally hard on the original disc, which has some compression issues, but is overall pretty solid in the looks and sounds department.

The massive upgrade here in in the extras. An hour-long, four-part retrospective doc and a 20-minute piece focused on Matt Damon make this a very worthy upgrade if you ignored the previous DVD port.

The haircut is for...Argo?

I've been following this movie since its release. I was in high school and full of dreams when it came out. I devoured every bit of trivia that I could glean from its production. Even so, there is loads of stuff discussed throughout the "Reflecting on the Journey: Good Will Hunting 15 Years Later" featurette that I'd never heard even an inkling about.

Williams is more relaxed and reserved than I expected.

For one, I had no idea that Mel Gibson was originally very seriously considered to both direct the movie and play Sean Maguire, the part that won Robin Williams his Oscar. Damon and Affleck, Williams, Kevin Smith, Gus Van Sant, and producer Chris Moore all appear to share stories, with many brand-new tidbits. The Matt Damon-focused featurette similarly shed new light on the man and his transition into overnight megastardom.

All of the previous extras (commentary, deleted scenes, production featurette, trailer, and so on) are retained.

This new disc, unlike the previous one, is very highly recommended for fans fo the movie. Price is hovering at around $11, and with the new extras and overall great transfer (with minor quibbles), I'd call this one worth the money. If you grabbed the last one, it may be something to consider if you're a big fan.
