The Will Smith of fifteen years ago is a very different animal than the one we have today. In 1995, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was in its fifth season, second Aunt Viv, and first year of "baby" Nicky as a five to eight year old. This season began a year before Independence Day kick-started the transformation into the Smith we know today. The fifth season includes a few standout moments, like one of the characters meeting a sibling as their perfect match through online dating, and a "Very Special" shooting episode. At $22.49, that breaks down to less than $1 an episode, which isn't bad.
From what I'm hearing, I'm glad to know that his producing the Karate Kid remake starring his kid was borne of inspired ideas rather than a cheap rehash. I would love to see him take more chances and do more daring stuff as an actor himself. A third Men in Black movie is not among that set of options. Oh well. I hope rumors of his wooing to Scientology are false or that he comes to his sense on that front if he's been drawn that direction.
